Many staff members are putting their employer's business information at risk by revealing too many details when they work on social networking websites, Sophos claims.
The security software company said people working on social networking sites are routinely revealing too much information and in the process are exposing their firm's data to hackers and other malevolent online forces.
More comprehensive IT training could help educate employees as to the potential dangers of social networking websites and the type of information that should not be shared.
Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, said: "The danger is that if you completely block staff from their favourite social networking site they will find a way around the ban - potentially opening up even greater holes in corporate defences."
He added that people also tend to use the same password on a range of different websites and online business applications, exposing them to further security risks.
A recent coding error enabled hackers to view personal information of many users on Facebook and MySpace.
