Some schools uncertain about ICT in the classroom

Some schools remain uncertain about the role that information and communication technology (ICT) can play in the classroom.

Although ICT is relied upon heavily by UK businesses, the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (Becta) has found that many schools are sceptical about whether ICT truly has a place in the classroom and can be used as a valid educational tool.

Claire Gill, director of communications at the agency, reiterated that existing teaching methods could be enhanced by new developments in ICT.

Speaking at Bett 2009, Ms Gill said: "They're complimentary and, where you are using it appropriately, you're not losing things, you're adding value."

She added that ICT was intended to work with, rather than replace, teachers' existing classroom methods.

Computer courses and additional IT training could help teachers and parents to become more familiar with new technology developments that could benefit their children in the classroom, and help address the "mixed views" held by some educators.

The 25th Bett exhibition took place at Olympia in London in mid-January.
