Social networks used 'virtually anywhere'

Social networks used 'virtually anywhere'

14:16 28th May 2010

Social media usage is no longer confined to a desk environment thanks to the widespread adoption of internet-enabled mobile phones, according to Jennifer L Jacobson, director of public relations at consumer electronics review and shopping website Retrevo.com.

"No longer is it something you need to be at a desk to do - you can do it virtually anywhere", she explained.

Her views emerged as Sony Ericsson announced that roaming data usage over the summer months is likely to increase due to a growing number of people using mobile devices to conduct their social networking activity.

According to Ms Jacobson, the spread of smartphones is also enabling social networks to enter emerging markets, "where people might not be able to afford or have the stability of desktop or laptop computers".

In March, a report published by Retrevo said that almost half of social media users check or update their Facebook and Twitter account in bed, during the night or as soon as they wake up.
