Social media have become a necessary utility of daily life, according to the chief executive of Online Social Media Daniel Chubb.
"Users right now use Facebook and Twitter more times a day than they do the telephone," said Mr Chubb.
His comments come as a new survey has revealed that 72 per cent of internet users - about 940 million worldwide - have become members of at least one social network.
The InSites Consulting research also found that Facebook is the best known social networking site in the UK, with 98 per cent of the users questioned knowing it by name.
Mr Chubb said that Facebook continues to dominate the social networking website market, noting however that niche social media sites are proving to be "more popular with many users with specific interests".
He added that youngsters "certainly cannot live without" using social networking websites to chat to friends and play games together.
