The success of social networking will be boosted by its move to mobile platforms such as tablet computers and smartphones, Daniel Chubb, chief executive officer at social media news website Online Social Media, has said.
"Mobile devices and apps will help social networking take another jump," Mr Chubb said, adding that the growing popularity of entry-level internet-enabled mobile phones could signal that "the boost is coming to take things to a whole new level".
According to Mr Chubb, businesses want to get involved in social networking websites, which could increase the prospect of achieving custom deals with big brands as networks look to monetise themselves.
His views emerged after new figures by mobile measurement firm Ground Truth suggested that that mobile internet can be as reliant on social networks as it is on the mobile data network itself.
Last month, InSites Consulting reported that 72 per cent of internet users are members of at least one social network, which translates to 940 million users worldwide.
