Knowledge of social networking websites is vital when it comes to job hunting, according to Claire Goodwin, sales director for womenintechnology.co.uk.

"Access to technology and the ability to use it to its full advantage really can be key to finding that dream job," she said, stressing that sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are important tools that make networking an easier process.

"The importance of networking can’t be emphasised enough - you never know who could lead you to your next job or opportunity," Ms Goodwin added.

Her views came as a new study by the BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, showed that technology can improve life satisfaction and increase happiness.

The report of about 35,000 people globally found that women and those on lower incomes are the ones to benefit the most from using technology.

According to Ms Goodwin, knowing how to effectively use IT "could put you ahead of the competition because the internet is home to a huge amount of job opportunities".
