People who give much away in social networks are at risk of becoming victims of identity fraud, according to IT security expert Robert Schifreen, who is also a reformed hacker.
Mr Schifreen said that many of the details people input in social networks are sometimes sufficient to allow cyber criminals to access their bank accounts.
"If you put out on the internet in general things like your date of birth, where you were born, what your mother's maiden name is [...] - those are the same bits of information that banks want to know for security questions," he said.
He went on to say that fraudsters find it very easy to guess a person's passwords after digging out information from them online.
People in the UK receive an estimated 420,000 scam emails an hour - the equivalent of one every seven seconds, according to research released this week by CPP, a provider of life assistance products and services.
