The use of social media in the workplace without the appropriate guidelines would mean trouble for businesses in the future, according to Doug Miles, UK managing director of AIIM (Association for Information and Image Management) Europe.
"Collaboration without governance is a recipe for disaster," he said.
Mr Miles went on to say that companies should put a policy in place stating that contributions to non-company websites are the personal responsibility of employees and do not reflect the company's views or attitudes.
In his opinion, this protects the company and allows it to deal with any "indiscreet" member of staff. "If you don't have a policy, when you discipline that member of staff, what are you disciplining them against?," Mr Miles said.
But he said managers needed to understand the benefits that the collaborative and innovative nature of social networks can bring to their organisation.
Mr Miles was speaking at the London leg of the AIIM Roadshow 2010, an enterprise content management event.
The use of social media could be taught in IT training.
