The use of social media platforms allows email marketing to reach a wider audience thanks to the trust deposited in such tools, according to Jon Maddison, UK country director at Epsilon, a marketing services firm.
"One of the advantages of social media is that it is very trusted," Mr Maddison said.
He explained that this is why social media is a great way of making existing customers aware of the content of email marketing campaigns, such as special offers, and of gaining new customers.
Mr Maddison said that because "there's no disconnect" between emails and social media they provide a seamless user experience.
"It's a nice, simple process for every recipient of an email, that's why it works as well as it does," he said.
His comments emerged at the digital marketing and online business trade exhibition Internet World, where he was speaking at Earls Court 2 in London.
The use of social media could be taught in IT courses.
