Social media 'becoming standard'

The use of social media is becoming more established in advertising and other related sectors, according to Tim Gibbon, the co-founder and editor of the Social Media Portal.

"Social media is becoming a more established channel across advertising, marketing and public relations," Mr Gibbon said during a speech at the launch of NM Incite – a new service geared towards social media understanding and analytics – backed by media giants Nielsen and McKinsey.

Mr Gibbon went on to say that professionals from agencies and brand-side are keen to show the return on investment thanks to the involvement in social media.

He also said that at this time, with so many promotional channels that social media touches, a multi-layered approach is key to ensure that "the right type of data and information is sourced".

Separately, 81 per cent of companies market themselves on Twitter and 78 per cent employ Facebook, according to a recent survey by Econsultancy and Guava.
