Social Search beta rolled out by Google

Social Search beta rolled out by Google

18:21 1st February 2010

Google has released a beta version of Social Search, a new facility that enables internet users to personalise their searches by including content from friends and online peers.

"We think there is tremendous potential for social information to improve search, and we are just beginning to scratch the surface," wrote Social Search team members at a blog post.

The service, which was announced as an experimental project last October, is being rolled out in English and requires an account and profile in Google that includes contact information and links to other social internet services.

The fact that it is still in beta means that Google believes that there is room for further improvement.

In other news, Google's voice search function, Google Voice, offers new opportunities for software developers, according to Andrew Pouros, chief operations officer for search marketing consultancy Greenlight.

Mr Pouros said Google Voice is "more than just speaking your search terms to instigate a query."
