Smartphones 'won't replace desktop computers'

16:47 22nd December 2009

The development of personal computing built into smartphones is not likely to replace traditional desktop computers, an expert has claimed.

"Smartphones such as the iPhone or the Google Nexus are where the biggest growth market is happening, certainly. Whether they will supersede the desktop PC, though, is quite unlikely," said Rosemary Hattersley, associate editor at PC Advisor.

Ms Hattersley said, however, that it was difficult to say what the next trend in computing would be. Though she said that consumers should keep a close watch on the handheld gadget sector.

Google's Android is a popular item and a potential good product could be a tablet PC designed by Apple that is as good as the iPhone, she said.

Her views followed a report from global intelligence firm IDC which said PC sales in the UK have experienced an increase for the first time in almost twelve months.
