Smartphones 'will become ubiquitous'

Smartphones 'will become ubiquitous'

13:29 24th May 2010

Smartphones will eventually dominate the entire mobile market and could even impinge upon the traditional computing space, according to Heather Mclean, editor of Mobile Business.

"This market is definitely going to spread and smartphones will overtake everything eventually. One day they will be ubiquitous," she said.

Ms McLean described them as "tiny computers" that offer users a wide range of options and enable them to complete all the tasks that they would normally do on a traditional computer.

Her comments came after a new report published by Gartner revealed that smartphone sales to end users jumped by 48.7 per cent to 54.3 million units in the first quarter of 2010 compared to a year earlier.

According to Ms McLean, businesses will be looking at mobile devices such as the iPad over the next two years to see how they can make use of them, but early take-up will be by consumers.
