Location-aware mobile phones have become a true alternative to dedicated sat nav devices, Danny Brogan, reviews editor of Mobile Choice, has said.
According to Mr Brogan, "with more smartphones sporting large vibrant screens and extended battery life," mobile phones are quickly replacing the esteemed sat nav.
He added that consumers can now carry one less device around with them.
Mr Brogan's comments came as a new report by Juniper Research found that users of location-based local search (on mobiles) would reach 1.5 billion by 2014.
The rapid growth is being driven mainly by increasing integration of Global Positioning System (GPS) into modern devices, along with declining costs of GPS equipment.
Also, recent figures published by information technology research and advisory company Gartner showed that smartphone sales to end users jumped by 48.7 per cent to 54.3 million units in the first quarter of 2010 compared to the same period a year earlier.
