Significant changes are set to be introduced to the IT industry around the world, according to one expert.
Tech Republic's executive editor Jason Hiner insists that the stereotypical 'geek', who can only communicate effectively through computer programmes, will need to adapt as businesses increasingly outsource aspects of the IT infrastructure.
In years to come, technology experts will be solving specific problems for a range of different companies, while business analysts with IT training will be working within individual firms to improve the way their equipment is utilised, Mr Hiner maintains.
"The ultimate factor driving change in the profession will be the long-developing trend toward companies hiring only the professionals who serve the core competencies of their business and outsourcing everything else to contractors," he wrote.
In making his case, Mr Hiner referred to a recent study by ReadWriteWeb, which suggested that the emergence of so-called Web 2.0 technology into the world of business is having a dramatic impact on the role of IT professionals.
