Online banking users should use different passwords for each web service they sign up in order to avoid falling prey to phising scams, security experts have warned.

"Consumers are not aware, or are choosing to ignore, the security implications of reusing their banking credentials on multiple websites," said Amit Klein of security firm Trusteer.

His comments came as new figures have revealed that 73 per cent of people share their online banking passwords with at least one non-financial website.

The Trusteer survey also found that about 47 per cent of users share both their ID and password with at least one non-financial website.

In other news, users of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter should step up their defences to prevent themselves from having their personal data stolen, an expert has said.

"The dramatic rise in attacks in the last year tells us that social networks and their millions of users have to do more to protect themselves from organised cybercrime," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.
