Scandinavia improves its mobile network

15:00 16th December 2009

The UK's IT industry could soon be looking to Scandinavia to seek out ways of improving its mobile communication network, as the region looks set to implement 4G technology.

In a move that could see more interest in the UK from the IT industry in the development of mobile phone technology, Norway and Sweden are jointly developing a new network that will deliver improved communications and a wide variety of services for users.

Mobile phone company TeliaSonera has announced it has completed work on two 4G networks in Stockholm and Oslo, which will provide customers with downlink speeds of up to 100 megabits per second.

The company has said the new services will be launched in early 2010, giving consumers access to high-quality internet.

The developments could have a significant impact on the global IT industry, by making internet access via mobile phones even more accessible and that could result in a major shift in the way online information is downloaded and accessed by consumers.

In the UK, the government has considered the option of using mobile broadband technology to help reach parts of the country that do not yet have access to superfast broadband infrastructure.
