Internet users are still tempted to open scam emails and that puts them at risk, according to Rik Ferguson, senior security advisor at Trend Micro, a security software and services company.
Many web users "are still very tempted to click on the URL [Uniform Resource Locator] that's in the email" even though they "recognise it as not being legitimate in any sense," according to Mr Ferguson.
He went on to say that most of these emails don't contain any kind of malicious attachment, but they contain a link to a website to allow criminals to attack. Adhering to IT training and not opening the links may help to improve computer safety.
He added that these websites can be "booby trapped" so that in the event of a visit, even if users don't provide their personal information, they can still get attacked by malware.
Separately, a report published last week by CPP, a life assistance company, revealed that more than 420,000 scam emails are sent every hour in the UK.
