EBook reader sales could start to decline from next year, according to Stuart Miles, owner and editor of Pocket-lint.
"There are a number of issues with the eBook that might mean that it is dead in the water," said Mr Miles.
He cited a number of factors that could hold the technology back, including the device's impracticality, noting that consumers cannot share them easily or use them in places such as the bath.
Mr Miles added that the expected entrance of colour devices into the market could also limit the appeal of current black and white models.
His views follow a survey published late last month by comScore which found that 15 per cent of internet users are seriously thinking about purchasing Apple's iPad tablet computer over the next three months.
In comparison, 14 per cent of those polled are seriously pondering buying Amazon's Kindle eBook reader in the same period, while one in ten are considering Barnes and Noble's Nook.
