Rutland Telecom delivers super-fast broadband

20:46 20th April 2010

Rutland Telecom is the first small company to exploit telecoms legislation in order to launch a rural community self financed scheme for the provision of high speed broadband.

Smaller groups have the option of using stretches of BT's wire network to offer super-fast broadband, in a move that allows them to create a village telephone exchange in the process.

As a result, the village of Lyddington raised £37,000 for Rutland Telecom to deliver the country's first ever broadband service from a street cabinet using a process called subloop unbundling.

You need to be local, smallish, and specialised to achieve it because you have to talk to the local community," David Lewis, managing director of Rutland Telecom said.

He added that the company had hundreds of inquiries for service, which proved that there had been a demand for it to take place.

"People want to live in beautiful rural locations, but one of the main things they haven't got is fast internet," he explained.
