Russian ISPs to require ID from those registering websites

20:34 25th March 2010

Russians wishing to register a new website will be asked for identification from this April, the International Data Group has confirmed.

The move by the country's internet service providers forms an attempt to reduce the levels of spam and malware-laden websites which operate out of Russia.

According to Olga Ermakova, information projects manager for Russia's coordination centre for top level domains, .ru administrators are focused on guaranteeing the "cleanness" of the domain.

"We don't need negative content, and such content is often [created] by unknown users", she said.

Luis Corrons, technical director at security firm Panda Labs, described the move as a small step "in the right direction".

He added however that "many things need to be done with the government and the laws" before the problems with websites can be solved.
