Rogue botnet shut down by US government body

15:31 25th May 2010

The Federal Trade Commission has permanently shut down 3FN, a rogue internet service provider that recruited, hosted and participated in the distribution of spam, spyware, child pornography and a series of other malicious and illegal net content.

The US government organisation believes that the 3FN botnet controlled more than 4,500 malicious programs.

Commenting on the announcement of the shutdown, Sebastian Zabala, a security expert and senior project manager for the UK and Sweden for Panda Security, said that "the government and the cooperation with it are needed" when it comes to taking out botnets.

Last month, Sunbelt Software presented its list of the ten most prevalent malware threats for March 2010. Trojan horse programs continue to dominate the list, with Trojan.Win32.Generic!BT being the major item for the month.

According to Sunbelt Software, the anti-virus industry is getting better at detecting new malware, thanks to a huge rise in the amount of new malcode being studied.
