Judge Dread style robots will have the power to arrest by 2084, according to a robotics academic at the University of Sheffield.
Professor Noel Sharkey predicts that crime-fighting robots, with access to citizen IT databases, including bank accounts, tax and movements, will be able to detect weapons and recognise aggressive behaviour.
The "superior knowledge robots" will be able to use their "super strength and inability to feel pain" to arrest criminals, according to Professor Sharkey.
He said: "The robots themselves will not be super-intelligent and will not be motivated to take over themselves, but those who control the robots will control society."
The university of Sheffield project examined that future of the robot in the UK and how it could be developed to aid police, based on recent developments and current robotic trends.
In other IT related news, researchers have claimed that swarms of robots could one day be exploring space or doing dangerous jobs, as they are often smarter than their self contained counterparts.
