PCs left on and unused are costing businesses inordinate amounts of money, according to a new survey entitled 'How much money are your idle PCs wasting?', by Doug Washburn.
Published by Forrester last week (December 5th), the report illustrates that companies must invest in the expertise of IT professionals to ensure they are not wasting valuable money and resources.
Simple energy-efficiency strategies such as powering down computers during evenings and weekends and ensuring employees have IT training to raise awareness of the importance of PC management were some of the report's recommendations.
Mr Washburn commented: "Far too many organisations leave economic and environmental value on the table by not reducing PC-related energy costs."
He added that a lack of understanding among employees about best practice in PC management was one reason for energy waste within companies, an issue easily resolved by IT training.
According to Friends of the Earth, PCs that are left on 24 hours a day use £59 in electricity and produce 716 kg in carbon emissions.
