Report security breaches or face tougher sanctions, says ICO

19:52 28th January 2010

More than 800 security breaches have been reported to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) in the last two years, the watchdog has announced.

The ICO has also warned that organisations risk facing tougher sanctions if they do not report security breaches that later come to light.

They could be fined up to half a million pounds when new guidelines are introduced on 6 April.

Deputy information commissioner David Smith said that an additional 100 organisations have reported data security breaches to the ICO in the last two months.

"We are keen to work with organisations to prevent breaches occurring in the first place and to help put things right when things do go wrong," he added.

In other news, the new developments in technology this year will be focused on improving security around cloud computing and virtualisation, an expert has been quoted as saying in a news report.

Businesses are set to witness increasing collaboration between suppliers as cloud and virtualisation technologies adopt a new approach when dealing with security issues, the report said.
