Removal of unlimited data tariffs 'to change peoples' usage patterns'

Initiatives by phone giants O2 in the UK and AT&T in the US to remove unlimited data tariffs for smartphones will change the way people use this technology, according to Steve Reynolds, the chairman of the MDA (Mobile Data Association)

In his view, the changes could affect the app economy.

"If you look at AT&T specifically, they saw a 3,000 per cent increase in mobile broadband consumption in a twelve month period and what seems to have sparked this off is the whole gamut of apps you can use – from Twitter to YouTube to Facebook," he said.

Mr Renoylds went on to say that consumers have gradually gone from using their desktop computers to using their mobile phones, so the telecom companies have had to adapt accordingly.

According to O2, the new rates should be enough for people to access a million emails, or 10,000 basic web pages, or 120 YouTube videos a month, catering for 97 per cent of O2's customers.
