Remote computing sites are increasingly becoming the main hubs to store and access music collections, according to John Russell, editor at DailyMusicGuide.com.
"Moving data and MP3s to the cloud is set to become popular with the hike in connection speeds," said Mr Russell, citing the increasing popularity of digital music.
He explained that the "ideal" of protecting digital music from hardware flops is "becoming all the more likely as storage and connections become cheaper".
His comments came after new figures by the BPI revealed that a robust last quarter and increased digital income streams helped offset the poor sales of physical formats in the UK music market last year.
But despite BPI reporting a 6.1 per cent drop in trade income from physical formats during 2009, CDs are not a dead format, according to Mr Russell.
"CDs have proven themselves to be surprisingly resilient, despite the boom of the digital age", he said.
