Qatar announced 50Mbs broadband network plans

11:11 12th April 2010

Qatar is planning to install a 50 megabit per second (Mbps) national broadband network in a bid to attract further investment in the country, according to the Peninsula Times, the country's major English daily newspaper.

Sheikh Hessa Al Jaber, the secretary general of ictQatar, the country's telecommunications regulatory authority, said that broadband technology was pivotal to help spurring investments in new businesses, the newspaper has reported.

Currently, 63 per cent of households in Qatar boast broadband network connections with minimum access speeds of 1Mbps.

According to Gill Upton, the editor of the Business Travel Magazine, Qatar's decision to build a high speed broadband network could be appealing to international workers, as "keeping in touch with their offices and the ability to work 24/7 is crucial to the business traveller".

The move comes as a new survey by iBAHN in the UK reveals that 72 per cent of polled UK broadband users fear that the country's broadband capability is approaching its super fast network limit.
