More needs to be done to promote the variety of roles available in the IT industry, according to Maggie Berry, managing director of womenintechnology.co.uk.
"There's a huge range of different careers in IT and they could be quite different but they are still under this one umbrella of working in information technology. There are so many different things in it that it is quite difficult for people to get their head around what working in IT might be like," she said.
The expert went on to say that people have a stereotype in their heads of what a career in IT is supposed to look like.
She also said that a lot needs to be done in terms of educating not only young people but also their parents and career advisors on the advice they should provide potential IT workers.
Ms Berry added that there is still a shortage of people who are prepared to study computer-related subjects and start a career in IT.
