Profits at Intel hit by EU fine

13:37 15th July 2009

Computer chipmaker Intel has revealed its second quarter profits and said future revenues will be hit by a recent European Union (EU) fine.

Despite returning 12 per cent growth, the company has to consider an outstanding €1 billion (£850 million) charge levied against it by the EU to consider.

Intel is currently challenging the decision, which ruled the firm had broken competition rules.

The European Commission declared in May: "Intel limited consumer choice and stifled innovation by preventing innovative products for which there was a consumer demand from reaching end customers."

Most people on IT courses will never get to see the Intel chips which power the machines they use, although people looking for a career change and moving into programming careers are likely to know that the company's components are widely used.

Intel has included the fine in its calculations and noted it will take the firm "into the negative".

Speaking to IT Pro, the managing director of Intel UK and Ireland, Graham Palmer, stressed the chip maker had has "delivered $8 billion (£4.9 billion) revenue, much above the expectations of the market."
