Sony has used the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco to present Playstation Move, its new motion controller which aims to challenge market leader Nintendo Wii.
But initial reactions from those who had the chance to play with the system at the conference were muted, according to the BBC.
Guy Cocker, UK editor of gaming site GameSpot, told BBC News he was "disappointed with the amount of real innovation we saw."
He added that in terms of ideas, Move is "very similar" to the Wii, adding that "if you are Sony, you can't help but want to ape that success."
Sony's marketing boss Peter Dille said the new system has the "potential to take gaming beyond where it is today".
In other news, Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield has unveiled his latest web venture, a multiplayer game named Glitch.
"We want to reach as large an audience as possible. We want to do for online gaming like what the Wii did for consoles," Mr Butterfield told BBC News.
