Pitcom acknowledges demand for next-generation broadband

17:40 5th December 2008

Next-generation broadband is the future of online media, according to the Parliamentary Information Technology Committee (Pitcom).

The credit crunch may be dampening the IT ambitions of businesses and domestic computer users, but increased expectations of digital media are unabated.

Pitcom identified the demand for innovations in internet technology but raised questions over how such a service will be installed and delivered across the UK.

Nick Palmer MP, member of Pitcom, speaking at the Westminster eForum keynote seminar: Next Generation Broadband, commented: "Obviously there is a whole range of issues on how and when, but I think the demand is going to be there."

He added that it was not straightforward to identify the extent or specific nature of UK demand for next-generation broadband as the market was global.

Ofcom will publish research in early 2009 revealing that 25 per cent of internet users said they were disappointed with the speed of their current broadband service. ADNFCR-1667-ID-18915001-ADNFCR
