Internet users are unlikely to pay for online content, according to Sachit Patel, founder of digital services firm Idea Taxi.
"Newspaper owners are banking on online news payments services increasing loyalty to their single services, which I personally consider to be unlikely," he said.
He went on to say that he believes consumers will continue to ask for both free, light news stories as well as more specialised news services.
His views contrast with a survey led by Harris Interactive which found that almost a quarter (23 per cent) of Times Online users have said they are "likely" to pay for the publication's news, once the paywall is erected.
News International, which owns the Times and the Sunday Times, said earlier this year it intended to charge for all content on its websites.
Separately, the survey, which was commissioned for paidContent:UK, also showed that 76 per cent of users had no plans to pay at all.
