Internet service providers in the UK would roll out their high-speed broadband access programmes quicker if consumers were willing to pay more for them, according to Andrew Ferguson, editor at broadband news and information site thinkbroadband.com.
"If the UK decides it wants faster broadband and is willing to pay extra, perhaps £10 a month more, then firms would be keener to roll it out," he explained.
But Mr Ferguson added that if the calls for the lowest price possible continue, "then we can only expect firms to deploy low-cost style solutions".
His comments came as the European parliament adopted a new resolution stating that half of all European Union houses should be connected to very high-speed broadband internet networks by 2015 and 100 per cent by 2020.
According to Mr Ferguson, a series of incentives, including loosening rules and regulations, such as business rates on fibre optic cable, "would boost the desire of firms to put more fibre in the local loop".
