Those using computers for work or IT training should remember obscure passwords for online networks can be stolen as easily as more obvious ones, says a computing expert.
According to a new white paper published earlier this week (September 2nd) by managed security firm Network Box, using passwords to access information does not offer adequate protection for confidential information.
Simon Heron, internet security analyst at the firm, reminded web users of a number of risks including keyloggers, phishing and trojans, in addition to hackers accessing user databases.
"Even if you have a very good password, it is still going to be pinched," he added.
One possible alternative to password systems is Identity 2.0, where users have a single online profile recognisable to a number of internet services.
However, Mr Heron said such a system would still fail to tackle all the risks associated with more traditional methods and stressed extra authentication checks would have to be put in place.
