PC sales receive end of year boost

15:50 18th December 2009

With more countries beginning to pull out of recession, there has been some good news for the IT industry as demand for new computers has begun to increase once more.

According to the latest figures from market analyst firm IDC, sales of PCs rose by 2.3 per cent during the third quarter of 2009, thanks to an increase in demand for netbooks, as the IT industry continues to innovate in order to attract new customers.

The results revealed a massive 33 per cent rise in sales of mobile devices such as netbooks compared to the third quarter of 2008, demonstrating the continued demand for new types of products being put onto the market by the IT industry.

IDC also suggested the release of Windows 7, Microsoft's latest operating system, had played an important part in the increase in sales.

Meanwhile, the company suggested there would be double-digit growth in the PC sales sector through to 2013, ensuring the sector can pull successfully out of the global recession of 2009.

Microsoft's Windows 7 has received a warm reception from critics, after the company suffered heavy criticism for its last major operating system, Windows Vista.
