PC market back 'on the path to growth'

PC market back 'on the path to growth'

12:05 21st December 2009

Demand for computers around the globe has returned to positive growth in the third quarter of this year, according to market analyst IDC.

The IDC Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker said there was an increase for the demand of computers of 2.3 per cent after three consecutive quarters of decline.

"Vendors are competing aggressively to capture back-to-school and holiday demand," said Jay Chou, research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. "Beyond stabilizing their business, PC vendors are trying to position themselves for gains as the market recovers."

The IDC said a main driver for growth included consumer portables, with shipments rising 33.5 per cent from a year ago, while consumer desktop demand remained weak as the market continued its transition to mobility.

The market analyst also said there are signs that the drop in commercial PCs is slowing down, which would mean IT spending could rise in the coming quarters. This could potentially mean an increase in computer training.

The IDC said 2010 see will see the market growing quicker than this year.
