'Over-reliance' on BT for UK broadband

19:14 20th July 2010

"There is an over-reliance" on BT for broadband in the UK, according to Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk.

Mr Dawson was commenting on the ramifications for British broadband if there had been strike action at BT following the Communication Workers Union's announcement that it had reached a three-year pay deal with the telecoms company.

"It is an issue – the majority of the UK is fundamentally reliant on BT somewhere along the line to get their broadband," Mr Dawson explained. The use of broadband is a topic that could be taught in IT training.

However, the expert added, Britain isn't likely to "implement a second system" to supply broadband since the country keeps one road systems and one rail system.

"By the same token, it means there definitely is an issue there," Mr Dawson said.

Separately, demand in the market should guide the way in supplying the UK with super-fast broadband, the culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, said last week.
