A worm has infected over nine million PCs that carry the Windows operating system and security experts have warned that the payload has not yet been activated.
The worm - known as 'Conficker', 'Kido' or 'Downadup' - has spread rapidly by way of infected memory sticks and low-level security on millions of PCs. It was first identified in autumn of last year and has spread at a rapid rate over the past few days. Although infection figures appear to be levelling off, the hackers responsible for the worm have not yet activated it, meaning that millions remain vulnerable.
Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant with anti-virus firm Sophos, told the BBC: "Microsoft did a good job of updating people's home computers, but the virus continues to infect businesses which have ignored the patch update."
The worm may convince more employees to seek additional IT training so that they have a better understanding of computer security issues.
Walesonline.co.uk recently reported that many Welsh parents are unaware of their children's internet habits, exposing many to internet viruses and identity fraud.
