Following its £7.1 billion takeover of Sun, Oracle is planning to start selling integrated hardware and software designed to reduce IT operating costs and boost performance.
"By combining Sun with Oracle, we are changing the economies of running a datacentre," said Dermot O'Kelly, vice-president of systems at Oracle.
The combination of Oracle database and Sun hardware allows the former to build systems that offer a 500 per cent performance boost compared to optimising database software on its own.
For the company's large customers, the new service will potentially cost millions of pounds. Oracle said it is its "duty" to talk to those customers "directly."
"We will have a direct sales team for our major customer accounts," said O'Kelly.
In other news, the Indian group that has won the rights to supply the event management software for this summer's football World Cup in South Africa has expressed its confidence that the system will run smoothly.
"We have tested the software by using it at 14 other FIFA events," said Dilbagh Gill of Indian software developer Mahindra Satyam.
