Online voting would 'boost' election turnout

12:56 10th May 2010

More voters would go to cast their ballots in the general election if they could do so online, according to Ben Camm-Jones, news editor at internet magazine Web User.

E-voting "would undoubtedly boost voter turnout" in future general elections, he said.

However, Mr Camm-Jones acknowledged that the implementation of such as system would be a difficult task. He said he could not see online voting "happening in a general election any time soon" as there would be a series of difficulties in launching it due to security worries and reliability issues.

His views emerged after a new report by telecommunications company Virgin Media Business said that e-voting received double the support from British web users in the run-up to this year's election than it did five year ago.

Mr Camm-Jones explained that the internet had allowed voters to get more involved this time by providing them with "a forum where they can discuss their views and exchange information".
