Online sports market lucrative for IT

The online sports market is one of the most lucrative in the IT business, according to a recent report.

Jupiter Research, the online trends and statistics group, found that sports fans are amongst the largest consumers of online video and amongst the biggest online spenders.

The company recommended that in addition to search traffic and video, sport sites should focus on different promotional tools, such as local events and networking agreements with local fan sites and blogs.

Bobby Tulsiani, analyst and lead author of the report, said that the real benefits of this could be gained by smaller publications and sites.

He said: "To fully tap into this lucrative audience, local sites must make a commitment to search engine optimization and search engine marketing."

According to PricewaterhouseCoopers, the British sports industry grew by 23 per cent between 2006 and 2007, and is expected to have one of the highest growth rates in the world as it prepares for the 2012 Olympic Games.
