Online spending accelerates

Online spending in the UK continued to increase in July defying the current economic climate, new figures have revealed.

The e-retail group IMRG and IT services company Capgemini disclosed that UK internet sales reached .8 billion in July, a rise of 11.3 per cent over June.

These figures are particularly impressive when compared to the latest British Retail Consortium figures, which show that high street sales are down 0.9 per cent from June to July.

Mike Petevinos, head of consulting for retail at Capgemini UK, believes that this reflects shoppers growing ease with buying products online.

He said: "There has been a lot of work done here to improve the fulfilment mechanism and in distribution and customer service, where the greatest challenge is for multi-channel retailers to leverage and integrate their distribution networks."

Last week, an IT industry analyst predicted that the market for internet video services is set for a major boom over the next five years.
