A civil liberties organisation has said that it is the duty of web-based companies to protect online privacy rights.
According to Anita Coles, policy officer at Liberty, internet groups "need to make sure that they act responsibly to protect personal privacy".
She explained that it is in the "best interests" of companies such as Facebook and Google to protect users' privacy because their "customers are going to become increasingly dissatisfied with the current arrangements" regarding issues such as data ownership.
Ms Coles added that online privacy is something that people need to be interested in because privacy is an "extremely important" human right.
Her comments came alongside reports that Facebook held an all-hands meeting last week to discuss its overall privacy strategy after facing growing scrutiny and media pressure following changes to its privacy policy.
In addition, Google has apologised for mistakenly collecting data transmitted from open Wi-Fi networks via its Street View cars.
