Ofcom announced on Monday (December 15th) that the organisation welcomed plans by Virgin Media to introduce a fast-speed broadband facility.
The upgraded service has been achieved by tripling the capacity of the network previously in place in order to ensure Ultrafast 50Mb is made available to at least 12 million households.
Ofcom chief executive, Ed Richards, commented: "We welcome the roll-out of super-fast broadband in Virgin Media's network. This will give millions of consumers the opportunity to take up faster broadband services.
"Alongside the plans announced by BT and other providers, this means that consumers can look forward to super-fast broadband in many areas of the UK."
He added that Ofcom would not cease to work in partnership with the IT business sector to develop guidelines for the introduction of high-speed broadband services across the country.
The results of the continued consultation will be released at the beginning of 2009.
Virgin media announced in November the launch of Up to 16Mb Virgin Media National service.
