Ofcom tells ISPs to better inform customers about broadband speeds

11:35 30th March 2010

Ofcom has warned internet companies to provide better information to customers about potential broadband speeds or face stricter regulation.

The telecoms watchdog, which used mystery shoppers to check how internet service providers comply with its code of practice on broadband speeds, found that about three quarters (74 per cent) of customers were not told that the speed they would actually get was likely to be below their maximum line speed.

"We will work with the internet service providers to ensure consumers receive the best quality information and amend the existing code accordingly", said Ofcom chief Executive Ed Richards.

He added that the regulator would carry on monitoring and assessing performance against its code in the coming months.

Meanwhile, Russians wanting to register a new website will be asked to provide identification from this April, the International Data Group has confirmed.

The move by the country's internet service providers forms an attempt to cut down the levels of spam and malware-laden websites which operate out of Russia.
