Nokia releases bicycle battery charger

12:09 4th June 2010

Mobile phone company Nokia has released new technology that allows individuals to charge their devices by cycling.

In news that could interest people in IT jobs, the Nokia Bicycle Charge Kit is made up of a charger and dynamo, as well as a holder to keep a phone in place.

The electrical generator uses the movement of a bike's wheels to deliver power via the standard Nokia 2mm charging jack

"Bicycles are the most widespread means of transport in many markets around the world. Now, with our innovative bike charger, people get even more freedom to use their Nokia without worrying about battery life," said Nokia vice-president Alex Lambeek.

He added that the kits will be available by the end of 2010 in selected retailers and online.

The announcement came as the company revealed its new C series, a set of affordable mobile phones with additional functions such as double SIM card functionality and six-week standby battery life.

Nokia reported net sales of €9.5 billion (£7.9 billion) in the first quarter of 2010.
