A project to build a fibre network, which will serve homes and businesses in Manchester, is underway, a news report has said.
The project has been hailed as one of the biggest in the country and could be a window into how Britain will implement the next-generation broadband, the report added.
"It will allow home working, telemedicine, video calling and net-based services on TV," Chris Smedley, chief executive of Geo, the company appointed to build the network, was quoted as saying by the BBC.
"It could completely revolutionise the way computers are used," he added.
Mr Smedley went on to say that consumer interfaces won't have to be huge because they won't need to store too much information.
"They won't crash so often and data will be more secure," he said.
In other news, government needs to be more proactive in encouraging innovation, the president of the Consumer Electronics Association Gary Shapiro was quoted as saying by the BBC.
