The risk of failing to protect data is exacerbated by the explosive growth of electronic information, mounting consumer concern and increased regulation, a new report has warned.
The Iron Mountain study has also found that less than 77 per cent of 3,500 organisations surveyed have set up policies that cover electronic records, compared to 80 per cent of companies that have established policies to manage physical records.
"This is an appalling indictment of the state of corporate data protection," said Andy Cordial, managing director at Origin Storage.
He added that companies that take a serious approach towards encryption are usually the most responsible when it comes to security policies.
In other news, companies in the UK need to pay more attention to the data they store electronically, according to a technology expert.
"There does need to be some extra stick involved to make companies focus more carefully on information they store on people," said Simon Heron, internet security analyst at international managed security services company Network Box.
