Research carried out by Point Topic has shown that the number of broadband users throughout the world has rocketed by 600,000 per cent.
In 1998, the number of registered broadband users numbered 57,200, however that number has soared to 400 million in 2008.
The burgeoning information technology age has witnessed the digitising of most aspects of business and domestic affairs, prompting a rapid increase in the numbers of people undergoing IT training to meet demand within the industry.
Oliver Johnson, senior analyst at Point Topic, commented: "When Point Topic started researching broadband in 1998 it was still mostly in the technical trial stage.
"Getting to 400 million subscribers in the ten years since then has been one of the fastest rollouts of a major new technology the world has ever seen."
He added that consumers are now becoming more sophisticated and discerning in their approach to digital media and are now seeking quality connections.
Point Topic was set up in 1998 to analyse trends within the field of broadband communications.
